Club Bellydance March 9

Club Bellydance at Oglethorpe University’s Lupton Auditorium
Location: Atlanta, GA
We are excited to announce that Awalim Dance Company will be performing with “CLUB BELLYDANCE.” This exciting new show will feature Bellydance Superstar dancers Lauren, Sabah, Moria, Sabrina, and Stefanya.

This show gives the BDSS dancers an opportunity to try out new ideas and choreography not possible in the full theatre show while at the same time enable the audience to watch their fellow bellydancers perform up close in an intimate club style setting. In each city, the local bellydance community will provide the first half of the show and the BDSS dancers the second half. Workshops will be set up wherever possible and of course the tour will carry the BDSS traveling store with a wide range of bellydance products at great prices. The tour runs from February 24th through March. We look forward to spreading the word on this shimmylicious dance phenomenon across America and beyond! Come join CLUB BELLYDANCE!

Just announced — a unique opportunity to learn the exciting art of Raqs al Assaya from a true master of the art!

On December 5th and 12th, Majda Anwar will be teaching a special session at Dance 101 focused on the various ways in which a cane can be used to accent your belly dance performances.  These sessions will be appropriate for all skill levels, and can be taken together or separately.

Majda will dive into technique that includes the Egyptian folkloric martial art Tahtib, Reda-influenced combinations, and an exploration of the modern American Tribal Style moves (for example, the Reach & Sit) that are based on traditional cane work.

Monday, December 5th
7 pm Beginner Saiidi Cane Technique
8 pm Saidi Cane for Tribal Dancers — The ATS Connection

Monday, December 12th
7 pm Beginner Saiidi Cane Technique
8 pm Sassy Saidi Combos and Drills

Dance 101 offers a variety of class card packages (sign up for their mailing list to get news about great class card specials that make classes as low as $11 each). The basic drop-in rate is $20.  Click here to learn more.

Power, grace and body control that are the pillars of this dance. Dismiss what you think of as stereotypes in bellydance…the women in this community are powerful. We dance to be strong, joyful and healthy. I often have women tell me they want to learn this dance for their husbands, I tell them your partner will actually get more out of it by the fact you are in a good mood when you return home from class, that you are feeling fit and that you are more self confident. Our main goals in class are to not only counteract the body type messages girls and women are receiving, but to also educate people about bellydancers and the culture that this dance form emerged from. First lesson is that neither size nor age has anything to do with your strength, stamina, or flexibility. Second lesson is that all kinds of people (yes, that’s right, both men and women) bellydance! Just in our little community in the Southeast US we have doctors, teachers, yoga instructors, Muslims, event producers, parents, home schoolers, executives, high school students, computer geeks, Christians, painters, accountants, etc…..you name it and we probably have one! The one thing they have all have in common is that they have sought out an art form that will keep them robust and radiant for the rest of their lives. Do you want this for yourself? Then get out from in front of this computer, come to class and join this growing art movement! Take back control over how the world sees women!

Awalim member joins Brizeus

We are so proud. Awalim member, Teejei Brigham has joined Brizeus!! She will be playing with them at this year’s Pennsic Wars and performing for Awalim members Majda and Ziah at Curee Salee.

Here’s a little about this fantastic group:

Brizeus is a group of pipers, drummers, and string players based all over the USA performing Celtic, historic European, and original folk dance music at outdoor festivals. We try to look the part from modern Highland games to historical festival to bellydance convention and will field a band of 2-6 players depending on the needs of the event. We sometimes play unplugged with just pipes and drums or with a PA into which we plug in a bouzouki and more bagpipes, flutes, smallpipes, and bombard. We jump around a lot. We’re always in tune. We teach dances to folks who want to learn.
